Some of you might be reading this blog and wondering, why is she even doing this? How can she like running that much? Doesn’t it get boring after a while?
I made a post a few months ago explaining why I signed up for the Sinister 7 50k ultra. However, I never mentioned why I have always gravitated to the sport itself. What is it about lacing up and hitting the trails that speaks to me?
I Have the Power!
Being successful in running is largely the result of training and dedication. If I work hard and stick to my schedule, then I will see improvement. Building the endurance and strength to cross that finish line is within my control.
This is not always the case in our lives. Sometimes pouring huge amounts of enthusiasm and hard work into a project only yields the tiniest trickle of success. Situational barriers and other people become gatekeepers to our achievements.
Running is different. You get out what you put in.
Mental Health
While on the trails, all I have capacity for is the here and now of the run. Pressure from other areas of life is replaced by a focus on completing this run and building my endurance for the ultra.
As a constant overthinker, taking my mind off things for even 30 minutes can make a huge difference in realigning my priorities. I often come away with a refreshed perspective of the situation. In short, running has become a tool for alleviating stress in my life.
I also find that being in the great outdoors accompanied by my fellow runners gives me a great boost of energy. I always come away from those group runs with a smile on my face.
“What do you do in your free time?”
We have all been asked that question in our lives. It is a go to question when meeting someone new. A way to find out if you have anything in common or just to get a feel for someone’s personality.
Many times in my life when asked this question I have resorted to providing a synopsis of my favorite series or movie. While this can lead to a nice conversation, it is not the type of answer that I want to give. Nor do I want to give a description of my job and go on about all my career aspirations.
I like the idea of having more layers to my existence and being able to share those with people that I meet.
I love running because it helps me to live purposefully and pushes me to become the best version of myself. Let me know if my motivational mumbo jumbo has convinced you to join the club
