Well, I have come across my first bumpy week…
Sh*t Happens
Getting sick mid-week combined with a holiday long weekend spelled utter disaster for the old training schedule. I tried my best to rest and recover so that my cold would clear up quickly. Unfortunately, this meant that I had to miss several of my runs.
Of course, I knew that these things would come up, but it is still tough to look at that Strava stat for the last week. Thankfully it disappears every Sunday night and I get a fresh slate!
The Big Picture
Although I have felt some frustration, this has been a good reminder that my ultra journey is a marathon, not a sprint (yes, pun intended). My stats might be recorded weekly, but it is the overall effort that will count in the end.
Taking the time to rest when I get sick or am injured will be crucial to the long term success of my plan. If I push too hard and get stuck on the short term, I could end up prolonging the recovery time and making things more difficult in the long run (I think I’ll just stop pointing out my hilarious puns now.. just know they will always be there as I simply cannot stop myself).
I have given myself a long period of time to train for this race. There is no doubt that missing a few runs in order to stay healthy will be the right decision in the end. What matters is that I stay on track and keep my goal front of mind.
Rest, it does a body good!
