I am not sure if I believe in the magic of New Year’s resolutions. But, I mean, it can’t hurt right?
It pretty much goes without saying that training for the Sinister 7 ultra marathon and keeping up with my blog are top of my goals list for this year. These are ongoing aspirations, so I wouldn’t really call them New Year’s resolutions.
For this exercise to really add value, I need to come up with something new. After some pondering, I have conjured three resolutions. Each can stand on its own, but the ultimate theme is “tools to help me finish the marathon”.
YYC Run Crew: Sunday Edition
As I have mentioned previously, the YYC Run Crew has been instrumental in renewing my enthusiasm for running. I enjoy going almost every Tuesday night and catching up with the great people that I have befriended.
There is another branch of the group that meets on Sunday mornings. I met up with the group yesterday, just to check the vibes. Happy to report that the group is just as relaxed and welcoming as the Tuesday night gang.
And so, my first resolution is to join the Sunday morning runs. I will be able to meet more people, something that I am always trying to do, and build in some motivation to get out for my second weekend run.
Eat a Vegetable
When it comes to food, convenience is the name of my game. Unfortunately, this normally translates to some pretty darn unhealthy options.
Objectively, I know that it is entirely possible to cook a nutritious meal and not have a culinary degree. However, getting to the point where the process becomes quick and easy requires a bit of base work.
My second resolution is to expand my repertoire to include a few more simple options that contain actual vitamins and nutrients… all that good stuff.
Knowledge is Power
I have watched many YouTube videos about running. These are definitely a great resource for tips and tricks. However, for me it can be a bit overwhelming and ultimately makes it tough to come away with a cohesive game plan.
After researching, I found a couple books to help me dive a bit deeper and formulate an approach that will work for me. These include Training Essentials for Ultrarunning by Jason Koop, which explores the more technical side of things as well as How She Did It by Molly Huddle and Sara Slattery, a collection of inspirational stories.
My third resolution is to read these books and use what I learn to make myself as prepared as possible for the marathon.
New Year’s Day really is a pretty great time to form some resolutions. There is generally a decent number of people in my life who are feeling the optimism and looking forward to that fresh start. Here’s to riding those positive vibes past the February fizzle all the way to race day!
Great pictures!! Happy new year G!
Thank you Amy 🙂
