When I decided to train for an ultra, I went through a list of potential hurdles I might face. Addressing these thoughts up front was a way to set realistic expectations for myself. Unfortunately, I forgot to knock on wood after listing all the bad stuff… so here I am.
Youch!
Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, I found myself hobbling along with an achy hip. Maybe my body was sensing the incoming snow and trying to sabotage my efforts to be outdoors (you know, for evolutionary purposes), or maybe I am just bad at stretching and foam rolling.
Turns out it is the second option, or so the physiotherapist says.
Taking it in Stride
It is no secret that running is hard on the body. In fact, I have been sidelined by muscle tightness on several occasions while training. Given this history, injury was top of the list of potential bumps in the road.
Luckily my exercise in setting realistic expectations seems to be paying off… I am not freaking out!
Instead of panicking I have managed to keep my head on straight and make a trip to the local physiotherapy clinic, just a couple blocks away.
Plan of Attack
For me, the most frustrating part about an injury in simply not knowing what is causing the problem or how to fix it. After making a quick trip down the street this morning, I have the answers I need to get me back on track and prevent this problem from recurring.
Eye on the Target
I want this blog to be a true portrayal of my journey. The good, the bad and the ugly.
Of course, a trip to the physio is frustrating, but I am still dedicated to my plan. A plan which will undoubtedly evolve over the weeks and months to come. The first evolution is to add more strength and flexibility work.
Positivity for the win!
