After weeks of hemming and hawing, I have finally picked my first ultra marathon. I am officially signed up to run the 50k distance at Sinister 7 on July 13, 2024.

Sinister 7 Ultra

Sinister 7 takes place in the Crowsnest Pass area and is named for the Seven Sisters Mountain that overlooks the course. It includes 50k, 50 mile and 100 mile distances. The two longer distances can be run as a solo or as a relay team.

The 50k course that I will run is sure to include some beautiful views of the Rockies as I climb 2,235 meters through the mountains. There will be plenty of time to take in the sights as the maximum time allowance to complete the distance is 13.5 hours.

I looked into this race in the past, just out of curiosity. While reading the webpage at that time I remember thinking how cool the race sounded, but also how challenging. There is literally a disclaimer stating, “We cannot stress enough the fact that this race is incredibly difficult. Be prepared for one of the toughest experiences of your life.” While that statement does still slightly petrify me, it also makes me very excited and proud to be pursing this goal.

Besides, they have thoughtfully provided a couple brochures to help me prepare for fighting a cougar or bear. So really there are no worries about getting lost (hopefully not literally..) in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains!

Challenge Accepted

I was initially leaning towards a local ultra marathon taking place around Calgary. While this race would have been much more convenient, it would also be much less difficult. How do I know this? Well, for starters there are no mountains in the City of Calgary! Also, the cut off for the local race is only 7.5 hours…

I have allowed myself about ten months to prepare for this race. If I am devoting almost a year to the task, I want to pick a race that is going to challenge every aspect of myself as a runner. Sinister 7 is sure to do just that. I will need to put 100% into my training in order to succeed.

For better or for worse I am now all in!

YOLO

This race is a huge undertaking. It will take hours of time and energy out on the trails and in the gym. Apart from the physical training, I will need to research running techniques and of course keep up with my blog!

I am lucky enough to have time in my life right now. I cannot say that this will always be the case. Given this fact, I think it is important to seize the opportunity. If there is a chance that this could be a one and done adventure, I want to make sure that I select the race that I am the most excited by!

Sinister 7 has the scenic views that I am looking for while also being extremely challenging. There is the added bonus that my Dad, who has competed in this beast a few times, has offered to come along and be part of my crew for the day!

One way or another, it is sure to be a very memorable experience!
